How To Defeat The Spirit of Depression

Depression is a spirit, a disease sent to afflict the body and torment the mind.  A person doesn’t get depressed over-night, it has been lurking and waiting for the opportunity to take control over your thoughts and this spirit doesn’t travel alone, it has companions.  You need to be able to recognize the symptoms of depression just as you would the common cold.  If there is no preparation or preventive care to offset this disease then you become vulnerable to its power, and once it has gotten possession it’s difficult {not impossible}to get rid of it.  This is one of the spirits in the Bible which can be called or known as a strongman.  “But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.”  Matthew 12:28-29

Before the spirit of depression enters the mind, other demonic spirits are at work to manipulate your thoughts, attitude, and character, many times we don’t pay attention to these spirits and accept the behavior because we believe it to be justified.  The Bible says, (Proverbs 23:7) “ For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.”  These spirits attach themselves and work on your emotions.  That is why many times, you “feel” something is not right, but don’t always know what it is or why you feel that way.  You are being manipulated and set up by the demonic spirit of depression, to get control over your mind.

Matthew 26:41 says Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”  Any enemy knows that to win a battle, he must learn his opponents weakness and vulnerabilities.  Here is a list of some of the low spirits that are sent to attack your mind through your emotions:  despair, despondency, sadness, sorrow, unhappiness, gloom, dejection, rejection, loneliness, melancholy, misery, wretchedness, trouble, mortification, worry, discouragement, dispiritedness, hopelessness, pessimism, distress, desperation, desolation, dreariness, heaviness of spirit, dullness, disconsolation, downheartedness, woefulness,  cheerlessness, disconsolateness,  dolefulness, darkness, bleakness, oppression, low-spiritedness, low self esteem, gloominess, glumness, disheartenment, sadness, sorrow, grief, unhappiness.  Recognize these spirits and don’t allow them to linger in your thoughts, take actions against them God has given those who filled with His spirit:

“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.  And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.” Luke 9:1,2  “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”  Luke 10:19

In order to defeat these low spirits and avoid a confrontation with the spirit of depression you first must be accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior and be filled with the Holy Spirit, who will give you power over the enemy and the spirit of discernment to recognize Satan’s tactics, schemes and devices to control and manipulate you.  Pray the Word of God daily and seek His for wisdom and understanding on how to overcome and defeat the spirit of depression.  Get a prayer partner to stand in the power of agreement with you, attend a local assembly/church with spirit-filled men and women of God, to be strengthen and encouraged.

Daily prayer is important in maintaining a positive attitude, it keeps you tuned in and sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.  Every Christian believer can pray and communicate with God any time, any place, any where.  Don’t be ashamed, embarrassed or afraid to talk/chat with God, for He hears us when we pray.  (Luke 18:1)  “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” (James 5:16)  “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (1Sa 1:17, 18)  “Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.  And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.”  (1Timothy 2:1-4)  “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;  For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”

The spirit of depression and its traveling companions, come to steal, kill and destroy any peace that you may have, and will use anything, any person including family, spouses, friends, associates or even a complete stranger to rob you of your peace of mind.  Be on guard, stay focused and alert, watch the company that you keep and the people you allow to be close to you; pay attention to the things you hear and see that can have influence over your rest and sleep at night.  Guard your thoughts, don’t be a trashcan for other people’s garbage, {gossip, idle chatter, back-biting and criticism} think happy thoughts(Isaiah 26:3)  “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”  (Romans 12:1, 2)  “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Ephesians 4:23)  “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;” (John 14:27)  “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”  (Philippians 4:6)  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (4:7) “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

When you read the Word of God or something that is positive that renews your spirit, and refreshes your mind, take time to reflect on what has been said, this is meditation.  (Philippians 4:8, 9)  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.  (Joshua 1:6)  Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.  (1:7)  Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.  (1:8)  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.  (1:9)  Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

You can defeat the spirit of depression by not being enticed into believing this lying spirit that speaks to a person’s mind negative thoughts and brings to them unhappy images and memories to keep them entrapped within it’s snares of bondage.  Don’t give in to it!  There are many things that saddens and grieves us without provocation or justification, (such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, losing a job, change in career, debt and illness are just a few to be named) however, don’t allow any of these things to defeat you, where you cease to care about yourself, forget your previous achievements and the things that you have already accomplished.  Continue to inspire to succeed in every aspect of life, while you have the opportunity to pursue your visions and dreams.  Love, with you whole heart, Eat healthy and enjoy good foods, and Pray without ceasing.

  3. Reblogged this on surefooted and commented:
I was just about to blog about the spirit of depression when I saw this blog. It says everything I wanted to say. This is what I experience. Thank God I overcame it!!!

Depression turned my laughing into tears. I would be having a good time and it be like nobody love you, you should die. Excuse me?! Can you say irky! This spirit smother you, don’t let you any fun. Then when something bad happen, it would say see told you. Then remind me of every bad thing that happen since birth. From remember that time your mother gave everyone a cookie but you to that guy Mike I really like not calling me back. It tried to turn my love for people into hate. It reminded me how I was there for everyone, but no one was for me. It took advantage of my ignorance and almost had me outta here! But God! It was clever how it came in after years of believing lies. I felt rejected, guilt and shame just was to name a few. I was the perfect victim. I thought I was all alone. I thought no one cared. I thought life was too hard. I didn’t know I aiding in my misery by sinning and living by the flesh. I didn’t know I was yielding to darkness. But God! Once I learn the truth and starting living for Christ it was out of here in a second. It couldn’t do that you should die line anymore. It wouldn’t work on me now. I have life. I know the truth. God love me. I can do all things through Christ. If I only knew sooner, but better late than never. Glad I didn’t die over this deception, that would had been terrible. That why I talk about depression now to warn and help others.

  4. Thank you Valerie for sharing your personal testimony, I hope and pray it will help others to know the signs of this destructive and enticing spirit, be forewarned it comes to steal, kill and destroy so do not submit your mind or thoughts to it, rebuke it and surround yourself with positive words and people who can inspire you. Stay connected and not isolated.

    1. Thank you and thank God and The Holy Spirit for this article! A friend of mine, who is very strong in The Lord, once said that depression is a spirit. At first it seemed so strange to me for some reason. How can such a thing actually be its own entity? I thought. But I just read this most important and eye opening article. Praise God in all his goodness! I now understand! And to think that all those other “feelings” are really spirits–amazing! It’s amazing because this word given here has helped me to see and understand the root cause of the horrible illness that I’ve dealt with since I was fourteen-years-old. But I remember being scared and “haunted”(for lack of a better word)since I was a little child. It’s time to raise my hands to heaven and rejoice, for the battle is on and I’m truly the victor in Christ Jesus, The Rose of Sharon…Amen!!

    1. God bless you Angie Marie Hill. The Spirits of Depression, Grief, Sorrow all work together to open the door for what the Bible is called “The Strongman” the spirit of Suicide. I want you to make sure you surround yourself with people who know how to do spiritual warfare and having a prayer partner is very important. God never meant for us to fight these spirits single handily. Here’s a couple of suggestions. Watch the DVD Movie War Room and get the Prayer Book or Journal. There is a book called The Bible Cure for Depression and Anxiety by Dr. Don Colbert MD. This will really give you spiritual guidance as well as things you can do to help strengthen your mind so it’s not vulnerable to Satan’s fiery darts of confusion, chaos and other spirits that torment the mind. The Bible says, “Such as a man (person) thinks so is he (or she.) “Blessed is the person whose mind is stayed on thee, You will keep them in perfect Peace.” Amen.

  6. Thank you for this article. For some reason I am under attack lately, not sure why. Good reminder for me to not let my mind control me. These damn demons love to mess with us and steal anything that’s good in our lives. I Refuse to let them win. I belong to the living Christ. I am His!

  7. I can’t say I’m a Christian yet as I’ve been studying religions for a while now to see which feels best for me. Anyway, the spirit of depression, to me, is like a cowardly snake in the grass that comes sneaking-up upon its’ prey. Most people don’t notice when depression first starts settle-in causing feelings to change. Regarding myself – I have two methods that work for me to get rid of depression. The first method works best if I use it as soon as I realize I’m feeling depressed. What I do is I get downright angry at the spirit. The spirit of depression is not a spirit that possesses a person. It can be cast out so what I do is I say in a loud angry voice “IN THE NAME OF GOD I COMMAND YOU!!!! SPIRIT OF DEPRESSION!!! GET OUT OF ME NOW!!! LEAVE ME NOW!! GET OUT NOW!” I loudly shout this out if I’m alone or if I’m not alone I will loudly shout it in my mind and I literally feel the spirit lift-off of me along with the depression! The spirit is almost cowardly. You can get rid-of it by COMMANDING it to leave you! Pay attention to how you feel before and after commanding it to leave! Remember to stay alert after and pay attention to how you feel because the spirit of depression is like a snake. It may try to sneak into you oh so gently at a later time or another day.

The other method I use is a Hindu prayer called the Moola Mantra. Basically said – the prayer calls out to God asking God to come to relieve all sorrows and suffering. The words to the Moola Mantra are not in English, but Sanskrit. I simply listen to the mantra and sometimes chant the words. Deva Premal, a new age vocalist, set the Moola Mantra to music creating a meditation CD titled “Deva Premal Sings the Moola Mantra”. The CD is available to listen to for free on YouTube. Perform a YouTube search if interested using the words “Moola Mantra Full”. Then choose the top search result. It’s best to listen to this prayer mantra using a pair of headphones while wearing comfortable clothing (PJ’s) and sitting in a comfortable chair. Make sure you won’t be disturbed for like 40 minutes. Note: The more a person is humble and in need of relief – the stronger the relief will be felt from listening to the Moola Mantra. Also the experiences had are to be experienced, but not supposed to be talked about.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment. I apologize for not replying sooner. It was lost in my spam mail and I didn’t see it until I was reading another comment on the article. There are different and various methods people use for healing of the mind, body and spirit. It depends on the individual and what they believe will work best for them. There are chemical drugs, herbs and holistic medicine but again it depends on the individual dosage and/or prescription. When it comes to understanding depression a person should seek spiritual and medical counsel from those who have knowledge and experience with this spirit of affliction. It is deadly and many people have lost their lives or were destroyed due to their lack of knowledge and understanding. I hope this article will help people to recognize what it is and give them some options on what to do before it gains control over their lives. Please feel free to share it via social media.

  9. Too many times we allow others to dump their mess into our lives that we forget about taking care of our own self for trying to take on everyone else’s problems. Then there are those times when life’s circumstances seem to get us down but God does not want us to live in defeat. Take it from someone who has been depressed and even suicidal. It was God who reminded me of his great love for me. We have got to fill those empty spaces up with his word and learn to care for self. Love yourself first and then you can take care of others. The word tells us to pray without ceasing Take it to the Lord in prayer and he will deliver you.
